Thanksgiving Dream

Smell the turkey in the oven,
Here comes my grandma to give me my loving.
I want some potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie,
Then I see the food being carried by.

I sit down to eat some food,
And man does it taste good!
First, seconds, and thirds . . .
Here comes desert of pie and ice cream
Oh my, what a wonderful dream!

Christmas

Christmas is white
Christmas is bright
Christmas is here just for one night!

Santa's in his sleigh
Elves are yelling' hey!
Christmas is here today!

Happy Is Your Birthday

Happy is your Birthday,
Merry Christmas! Pull your sleigh.
Every single holiday is
Happy in some way.

Kwanzaa is the Harvest,
At Easter you get sweets,
Whenever holidays are here,
Families meet and greet.

Chanukkah is Joyful,
Halloween is fun.
But no one ever likes it
When the holidays are done!

   It's almost here
The season for spreading some holiday cheer.

Rough-housing in the snow
Ice skating by the moonlight's glow

The smile on a little boy
Music's delightful sound

Sharing presents with family and friends

(I wish that this season wouldn't ever end.)

Christmas Poetry

Cherish the hop of Christmas.
Have a very happy holiday
Round up the presents
It's a time for love
Stay home with your family
Take the time to show you care
Make this holiday fun
Ask for what you need
Say thank you for this day

People you love are near
Oh, most of all have fun
Eternal life is here on this day
Take time to listen to carolers sing
Ring eternal life's bell
Year of angels

Touchdown

21 stuck on the scoreboard.
5 seconds hanging on the clock.
The kick!
Crash, bang, rrrr
30
   40               5
      50         10
         40   20
            30
Crowds cheering,
Coaches jumping up and down.
Teammates piling on me!
How big will our trophy be?

I looked past my coaches,
And what did I see?
A big trophy staring back at me!

Baby Jane

She was a doll.
She was bald.
She had a Tax Jumper
And bicycle pumper.
I loved her so much
I never let anyone touch.
If they did,
They would no longer be a kid.
She always wore sunflowers
And fell in powders.
One time she took a bath
After she left a mud path.
She always cheered me up
When I was crying like a pup.
Why does she always laugh?
I will never know, not even after 10 paragraphs.
Maybe because she is happy to be with me
In a joining circle of life and a family tree.

Slippery

All of your blood is red
Most of your bruises are black
Floors are very slippery
When they're covered in shellac
Be careful where you step
When you're walking in your socks
You could slip and fall
And break all your mother's clocks.

My Cat

(A poem for two people)

                                             My cat
Has a green hat.
                                             My cat
Sat on his hat.
He bought it for the parade.
He said he'd pay his own way.
                                             He wouldn't sit still.
Until...
                                             He got his own way.
Then he walked away.
When I got to the parade,
You'll never guess what I saw -
                                             My cat was selling lemonade
And doing the cha-cha!

Cassi Humble

   Cassi Humble is her name,
Playing basketball is her game,
She is nice, she is kind,
She's a friend that's hard to find.
At the mall she like to shop,
She likes to drink soda pop.
   She's really, really lean,
She's never, ever mean.
   She likes kittens and lizards,
She hates to eat gizzards,
She's my friend, that's no doubt,
If she wasn't, I'd surely pout.

Brittish Dawson

Her name is Brittish Dawson
Sometimes she can be awesome.
   We are always friends.
Sometimes our friendship bends.
Purple and turquoise are her favorite colors
She has told me of no others.
On the phone she likes to talk,
To me it's more fun than taking a walk.
her favorite animal is a bunny
She can be really weird and funny.
She enjoys reading and riding bikes,
Those are some things she really likes.

Highjump

Your adrenalin is pumping,
as you run and jump.
The bar is at 16'0".
Can you make it?

Your back is arched.
Yes! It looks like you might.
You're soaring over.

You're coming down.

Oh! Your foot.
It catches the bar.
Down it comes on top of you.

You'll have to settle for 2nd.

Cassi

Cool imagination
Always fun
Sometimes mean
Sometimes nice
I will never pick a fight

Has a good sense of humor
Used to be a grump
Might seem stubborn
Best friend to many
Loves to play basketball
Earth's care is my project

Pushing The Pedals

I get my friend,
we call and meet,
Mounting our bikes and pushing the pedals,
Speeding! Flying!
s-l-o-w, s-l-o-w
just ride gently
talking and thinking
about things
We go fast again whoosh
to a screeching halt.

Now we're alone, the
fun is gone.

But it will happen again.

Michael

Mimic people when playing basketball
Into playing sports
Considerate to others
Helps people who need him
Air Bailey is his nickname on the court
Excellent at math
Late for some events

Gymnastics

When you do a flip on the beam
It feels like you tore a seam.

When you flip on the bars
It feels like you are flying to Mars.

When you are running to do a handspring on the horse
You want to take a whole new course.

Whenever you are on the rings
Your back hurts and stings.

When you are done and on the floor
You usually feel like doing more!

Down Hill Biking

I look down the hill as to where I will race;
I pedal and pedal, mud flying into my face.

Rain beats the cold titanium frame of my bike;
A feeling of freedom I really do like.

Twigs from the ground fly into my calves;
Sticks under my tires snap into halves.

I ride through muddy rivers and creeks
And sometimes hop off small peaks.

A rush of adrenalin runs through my blood;
My heart pounds faster with each mighty thud.

Alfred E. Neumon

Alfred E. Neumon is young and small,
I never intended to see him at all.

He is nice, friendly, and very sweet,
He is the kind of animal you'd like to meet.

Clawing the door, he makes lines,
To express his feelings, he always whines.

Upon his toys he always chews,
Upon my bed he likes to snooze.

With him I like to jog,
Alfred E. Neumon is my dog.

The Receiver

We huddle for the next play
"Go deep! Go long!"
The quarterback says,
"The play is on the 30 yard line."

I crouch in position
Like a lion ready to spring.
Hike! Hike! Hike!
I run like a cheetah toward the end zone.

Here comes the pass!
My heart is pounding
My feet are trembling
I catch the pass and hold it like a baby.

Three blockers come at me,
I use my spin moves! 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5f!
"He's going all the way," they say.
A touchdown it is!

Terry

There was a kind named Terry
Who fell in love with Mary
It started at once
With lots of stunts
The whole romance was scary.

Bowling

Feel your arm going back
Then your arm going forward
Your thumb pops out of the ball.

THUMP!
The ball hits the alley
Rotating, rotating, rotating,
Zooming down the alley

CRASH! BANG!
P i n s               everywhere
             flying

Crowd cheering!
I
Drop
To
My
Knees
But only nine pins fall!

Hockey

Hockey
Difficult, painful
Skating, checking, slashing
Very hard to play
Hockey

Creamy and wonderful
Appetizing to your tummy
Rich and yummy
Always delicious
Marvelous tasting
Excites you very much
Lovely CARAMEL

Throwing Rocks

My mother caught me doing it,
She really got me good!

That dumb old Jimmy told me to,
I didn't think I should.

But I did it anyway,
And my mother caught me good.

She saw me throwing rocks,
When I didn't' think she would.

At least she didn't hit as hard
As my father could!

Chess

I love to play chess
But sometimes I end up in a whole lot of mess.

My dad is really good.
We like to play and eat food.

My mom is really bad.
When I play my sister, she ends up mad.

Chess is a whole lot of fun,
Especially when you play it a ton.

We Could

"Hi Matt."
             "Hi George."
"How's it going?"
             "Fine, but I'm bored!"
"Well, we could . . .
Swing and sing,
Dance in France,
Walk and talk,
Swim with Jim,
Eat a treat,
Draw a ball,
Shoot a hoop,
Go skate,
And have some cake,
Lie under the sun,
have some fun.
Or we could just play.
What do you say?"

Rain

P
it
ter-
patt
er, pitt
er-patter,
pop, pop, pop!
Pitter-patter, pitter-
patter, whoosh, whoosh,
whoosh! Pitter-patter,
Pitter-patter, flop
flop, flop!

Spring Time

Spring time is a wonderful time;
It makes you laugh all the time.
Birds flying, kids crying.
It's fun because it's barbecue time.

Fall

The season after summer is fall.
It's the season to play football.
It may be a little cold,
That is what I have been told.
In the year, fall comes late,
It is a season we await.
We can put away our summer clothes,
And get ready to have a runny nose.
School starts at this time of year,
That's what most of us fear.
All the leaves we must rake,
And pumpkin pies we can bake.

Spring

Spring is fresh and nice
Out come animals - just like mice.
And all the birds will sing,
Oh, what things spring will bring.
Those who love winter will be sad,
Those who love summer will be glad!
Flowers pop up and then they bloom
Popping up also are little mushrooms.
Spring is here and it is pretty,
Even if you live int he city.
You can get out your bat and mitt,
And throw the baseball - lickety -split!

Water

Water is nice and clear
Water is fun to play in when it rains
Water is great to swim in
Water is good to drink when it is cold
Water is wonderful to fish in
Water is good for making ice cubes
Water is great to make coffee and Kool-Aid

I Can Feel The Night

I can feel the night
For it is so right
And if you look deep into the sky
You can see the moonlight

For it is so beautiful
And (whoever reads this poem)
So are you.

For the night is right,
So read this again
And think of the night!

Angel

I sing the beautiful morning sky,
I soar int he air like the wind itself.
I sail the ship called Dreamer,
I polish the stars when the night sky comes.
I ride the unicorns across the clouds,
I dive into the sea of fantasies.
I follow the moon as my guide.
Come with me, friend, join me . . .
My adventures are everlasting.

Winds

The winds rush by
Like they're alive
In the white covered snow,
Whipping as the cold air blows.
Up on tip toes it whips along
as if singing a song,
Ever so whistling
As winter is calling
And the snow keeps falling.
It runs on ice. It has turned
To burn in the cold winter night.

Hunting

                                 Why do
                                 People hunt?
                                 For the fur?
                                 Or are they drunk!
Pretty soon, animals are going to be
                                 Extinct,
Then the hunters will see a shrink!
                                 Especially deer,
                                 Those are the ones
                                 I fear!
Maybe the animals are over populated;
                                 I don't know,
                                 but I think the hunters
should be locked up in a dungeon!
You might disagree with me,
                                 but I think
                                           animals
                                           should be
                                           free!

Thunderstorm

There was a storm at exactly nine,
And I was doing my homework just fine.

After I saw the lightning
I began to feel frightening.

I was under my bed
Talking to myself and said,

Don't worry, you'll be okay,
You'll live to see another day.

I wished the storm would go away,
Then I looked outside and said, "hey!"

The storm went away as I hoped,
Too bad I was already soaked.

Haiku

Silent as can be
Quiet, hush! Bird's wings flapping,
Like a winter dawn.

Blaring like a band,
Big, loud, noise! Booming Crashing
As a thunderstorm.

Two Seasons

                    Fall
leaves falling like color ful confetti
Thanksgiving and food; presents and Christmas
shopping and singing joyfully in the snow
                    Winter

Spring

The fresh air filling your lungs
Soft breezes warm you up
and cool
              you
                    down
Spring is coming, spring is here.

Birds chirping a wonderful song
Flowers explode from the earth!
Spring is coming, spring is here.

Bees buzzing popsicles drip from
                                                  the tip
                                                           of your
                                                                       tongue.

Spring is coming, spring is here.

Frogs

Frogs make
Fantastic jumps and usually
Fire their tongue to get lunch
Frogs have scaly skin and
Fairly good senses.

Bees

Bees
Hurt me
Make honey
Do too much work
Are very small and fly
Are part of the insect group.

Snow

Snow - white as can be
Glistening in the bright sunlight
   Covering the ground.

Bugs

Bug, you're a real big pest,
You never ever let me rest!
You really put me to the test,
I certainly don't like you the best!

You eat up all my food,
You put me in a really bad mood!
You ate my clothes and now I'm nude...
I'm gonna call that pest control dude!

Earth

I bring summer, spring, winter and fall.

I bring hot and sticky days
To make you pray for a breeze.

I bring lots and lots of rain
For your crops you see.

I bring sleet, I bring snow,
I make the bare chilling wind to blow.

Beautiful leaves I also make
for you to
                  rake,
                           rake,
                                    and rake.

I bring . . . summer psring, winter and fall.

Snow

Snow,
Look at the way it blows.
It's white,
So pack it up tight.
Watch out, it's cold,
But it's easy to mold.
It's fun,
As long as there's no sun.
But when the sun comes out,
I always start to pout.

Flowers

Flowers
beautiful
Oh so fragrant
pinks, whites, reds
so lovely in the spring
Carnations

The Lion Poem

You can hear my ferocious roar
Like the sound of waves crashing on shore,
You can hear the beat of my pound
When my big, bold feet touch the ground.
I eat my prey with my husky teeth,
And all of them are rare fat with beef.

I am the king of beasts;
I am a powerful cat!

One day my bunch will ride
And when we do, you'll fear our Central African pride.

Storms

Crashing of violets, blues, and indigos flash through the night!
Winds cry in mourning fright,
Trees shake their heads in a pleading no.
                         BOOM
BOOM                                    of thunder like hitting iron in
               BOOM
                                        tremendous rates.
                                                                          CRASH
Then PING                                  !
                      PANG

Frogs

        Frogs...
   Green, slimy,
   Jump...
           blink...
                  croak...
Living in swamps.

Take Off

The motor starting, vibration like the purr of a lion
Pressure on take off peels your skin back
Speed so great, it's as fast as a bullet
Heat roars from the afterburners.

My Dad

I always heard it was bad,
Lung disease and cancer,
But I never imagined him dying of that.
Every day he pulls it out and lights it.
The smell of smoke fills the air and makes you gag.
I always wish that he won't end his life this way.
Every time he does it, he is weakening his chances of living,
That every minute, that every moment, that every second.
I pray for him to stop, because I can't make him.
Only God can reach him now!

Coal Dump

I walk up the rocky path,
The pebbles crunch from under my feet
Making sounds like they
Are chattering to each other.

When I reach the top,
I see the sun
With a smooth yellow light.
Up here I am safe
From all of the violence of
                                        the
                                             city
                                                   below.

Maybe

Maybe we can clean the world
Maybe we can heal the world
Maybe we can save
The animals from extinction.
maybe we can stop the violence
Maybe we can feed all
The hungry children.
           But first . . .
Maybe we can live together
Maybe we can sing and laugh
Together forever.

Guns

Sadness is in the air,
A child is on the ground.
His mother by his side,
Screaming at the world.

Everyone stares
Like a hawk on its prey;
Ambulances roaring
Down the street.

The boy was only ten,
Caught in the crossfire.
Three hours later pronounced dead.
Don't use guns, That's what I said.

Ouch

With a sharp knife I cut my finger
A bee got me with its stinger

I busted my head open on a rail
Then I sat on a rusty nail

I banged my knee into a big tree
I got beat up by my brother Lee

I'm really hurt, I'm in great pain
In fact I need some novicaine

Now I'm in a hospital room
'Cause I'm coming to my doom.

A Cat's Day

A little cat on a bed
Stands up and licks its head.

Does its duty in a box
Then pounces like a fox.

At its dinner on the floor
Right by an open door

Sticks its head out, left then right,
Sees a dog that wants to fight.

Gets scared and turns around,
Then trips and falls to the ground.

Rolls over, belly up,
Looks around for its milk cup.

Sees its milk cup right away,
But falls asleep 'cause it had a big day!

Saturday Morning

Time

Time is a thing I can't waste,
Time never stays in one place.

Time is like a bomb --
It just might blow~

At last my time is up,
And your time has just begun.

As I beg for more time . . .

Kisses

I heard her screech
The night my rabbit died,
Running to her cage
I began to cry.

My mom told me not to touch her,
I didn't know what to say.
We never knew what happened
I always thought she'd be okay.

She died so quickly,
It was time to say goodbye.
It hurts me deeply
I wonder why she had to die.

We buried her under my favorite tree
I think about her every day
I still can't believe she's gone
I don't know what to say

My lesson is, not every animal lives,
They die of many things.
Everybody is sad when a loved one dies,
You never know what God brings.

Ice Cream

Whirrr . . . the machine rumbles
Like a hungry belly
As it churns the ice cream.

Hot chocolate sauce boils on the stove,
Chocolate and vanilla in my bowl like piano keys.

It's mouth watering!
I can taste the luscious ice cream,

It feels like cotton.
As it slips down my throat

I
  can
        feel
              it
                trickle.

The Principal's Office

No! No! Not there - not there!

He's already given me a detention!
And even a suspension!

(How I hate that office.
How I dislike that principal.)

They call him a pal?
He's a horror to me.

What? I didn't get caught putting glue in his hat?
I got an award? Oh, fancy that!

How I LOVE the office.
How I like that principal

Test

Before a big test I had to take
My body began to shiver and shake.

When I started question one
I knew this test wouldn't' be fun.

By the time I was on question ten,
I wished someone would lock me away in a pen.

The next day when the teacher handed them back
Mine was a the bottom of the stack.

When I finally dared to look at my grade,
I stared in amazement; it was a big fat "A"!

I Know

I know if I should or shouldn't
I know if I would or wouldn't
I know if the clouds are gray,
I know where the puppy lay,
Knowing stories in my head,
Knowing what the teacher said,
I want to know about the world,
I want to know why our hair is curled,
I wonder why living things grow,
I wonder what is down below,
Knowing all the things that are in creation,
Will take lots of imagination!

Alone

     Wishing for a light
I lay in a cold dark place
     Wilderness, alone.

Morning Sounds

Morning sounds
Toilets flushing
Newspapers crackling
People yawning

Morning sounds
Music form a radio
The crunching of cereal
Alarm clocks going off

Morning sounds
Clicking of the TV
Popping of the toaster
Crying of babies

Quiet

Quiet is the night
When there is no fight

Quiet is the mouse
When it's curled up in its house

Quiet is the sunrise
As it rises in the skies

Quiet is the butterfly
Flying gracefully through the sky

Quiet is the first snow
With its beautiful flow

Quiet is the infant sleeping
Mother a silent watch is keeping.

Today
          I

Dream

I have a dream
I have a mission
I have a dream
I have an ambition

A dream to fly
A dream to soar
A dream to glide
Right out the door

Over the city
Over the town
A dream to fly
And never come down

I'm friends with the birds
On the moon I sleep
It's nice in the sky
So in the sky I'll keep

I can go anywhere
I can do anything
I make the winter
The fall and the spring

I make it rain
I make it snow
I'm king of the sky
I make the stars glow

I fly over Paris
Hong Kong and Rome
But I miss  my family
It's time to go home

I hope they'll have me
I miss them a lot
I hope they haven't forgotten me
Because they're all I've got

I'm flying back over Paris
Over Hong Kong and Rome
I really miss my family
That's why I'm flying back home

The Sixth Sense

A Compilation of Writing by Sixth Graders at Fairview Elementary

(from inside the cover)

Welcome to our class magazine. We realize that you will find mistakes in some of the pieces. Please understand that we are still learning; we hope the mistakes will not interfere with your enjoyment of our writing.

What an amazingly meta cover, the cover IS the cover. Delightful. So my mom found this old book somewhere and then I typed it up, because apparently I have poor time management skills. The poems are broken up into: Looking at Life, Nature, Friends & Fun and Holidays. That, as well as the author, can be found in the tag of the post.
